If you are a Speech Language Pathologist you are well aware of how successful the minimal pairs approach is when working with students. The drawback is accessing the minimal pairs you need when you need them. There are just so many different substitutions our students can make for the sound in error!

This is why we have been working hard to make sure you have the minimal pairs you need, when you need them, right at your fingertips (no printing, cutting, storing or organizing required).

We are excited to announce that we have added 836 new pair sets and a total of more than 4,700 pairs. That means we now have over 7,500 pairs in Articulation Station Hive!

Imagine how much it would cost to purchase 7,500 minimal pairs cards from a publisher… Wowzas! With Articulation Station Hive you get all these easily accessible pairs at a cost MUCH, MUCH less than purchasing them in paper form… and this includes all the other amazing features and activities Articulation Station Hive offers!

Using Minimal Pairs in Articulation Station Hive

You can use minimal pairs in Articulation Station Hive to work on auditory bombardment by sliding between the pictures and tapping on the picture for an audio example of each word.

You can work on auditory discrimination by having the child identify the correct picture of the printed word. Or you can work on speech production by having the child say each word.

You can easily access the minimal pairs in phonological processes or in phonemes with Articulation Station Hive. You can also use the pairs to target multiple oppositions.

Target Pairs in Phonological Processes

Target minimal pairs in phonological processes by opening the dock in Articulation Station Hive. Then select phonological processes and choose the process you want to target. Select the sound position and the pair sets you want to target. Then select the pairs you want to practice. Once the activity begins tap the orange pairs icon in the upper corner of the card. Then slide between the two words.

Practice Minimal Pairs in Phonemes

To practice minimal pairs in phonemes select the phoneme you want to practice. Then select words and minimal pairs. Select the sound position you want to target and the pair set or sets you want to practice. Review the pairs offered and select which pairs you want to target. Then begin.

Multiple Oppositions

Multiple oppositions can be practiced by opening the target phoneme from the home screen, selecting words and minimal pairs. Then select the sound position you want to target and all the pair sets you want to practice.

For example, if you want to contrast k with t, m & g select k/t, k/m & k/g from within the k program.  Then tap on “deselect all” (found at the bottom of the pairs on the iPhone). Then scroll to find words with a contrast pair for all the phonemes you want to contrast. Select pairs that have a contrasting word for each sound. You might select cap/tap, cap/map and cap/gap or coat/tote, coat/moat and coat/goat. Once you begin you can easily swipe through the pairs comparing the target word with the contrast pair.
